Moullinex & Xinobi round off an incredible year with a joint single Imaginary Numbers - out now!
The latest track to be produced at our new Lisbon studio headquarters, ‘Imaginary Numbers’ continues their long running partnership marking their first joint outing since 2019’s ‘AZUL’.
Since then, they have both creatively grown in leaps and bounds. In a year that has included Xinobi releasing an expanded edition of his hugely acclaimed last studio album ‘On the Quiet’, and seen him re-collaborating with Gisela João, on a remix of her ‘Tábuas do Palco I’, as well as remixes for other eclectic artists such as Luca Musto (on ‘Toledo’), Omri Guetta & Omer Tayar (‘Trip In’) as well as recently releasing a new EP ‘Morangos’ on Frau Blau, 2021 has been prolific to say the least. Xinobi just topped it up with the release of recent single ‘Helium’ as he heads back into the studio to finish his next studio album set for release in April next year with the first taster from the album arriving in January.
For Moullinex, it’s been a year dominated by his new album ‘Requiem for Empathy’. An album rooted on the dancefloor but capable of taking the listener into a journey of introspective contemplation. It includes collaborations with Sara Tavares, Selma Uamusse, GPU Panic and Afonso Cabral, artists who have been redefining the Lisbon music scene by connecting the multiple cultural expressions to which the Portuguese capital is a natural meeting point. Having seen support from Pete Tong at BBC Radio 1 (UK), Nemone at BBC 6music (UK) and many more, singles taken from this record have already received remix treatments by LA disco-don Poolside, UK maestro Seb Wildblood, Patrice Bäumel and Damian Lazarus. Online album features followed in ample supply from the likes of KALTBLUT, The Fader, Mixmag, DJ Mag and Dezeen to name a few, all rightfully giving the album the acclaim it deserves. The album also spawned the Live at Eléctrico EP. Between then and now Moullinex has also found the time to collaborate with Angélica Salvi (on single Burnt Cork) and compose the music for the re-brand of Portuguese bank Novo Banco.
Now Moullinex and Xinobi are back together. From the get-go, there’s a real sense of surety that oozes from ‘Imaginary Numbers’; as what these two are essentially presenting us with - is their own re-construction of - and daring riff on - those original, raw Trance and House blueprints. But when those familiar crystalline and emotionally charged sonics present themselves here, they’re not kitted out in the loud and brash gear we’re led to expect - but a sleek, minimal new get-up that’s a shade understated and quite refined.
Timed nicely also to celebrate their return to touring, it's euphoric, romantic, no-nonsense club music for peak time, with a catchy melody that hugs the track in melancholic nostalgia and romance.
